Advanced Overnight Camps 2008

Ancient Ways Camp

  Aug.3-8   Ages 11-up   $525

This camp is for campers who have been to Earth Roots for 2 years.  Here campers will further their knowledge and become a tribe in a sense, living close to the earth and interweaving primitive living skills into daily camp life.  We will spend much of our time living like the ancient ones and moving about the land as a native scout. This week is flexible and shaped around campers interests and passions, opening us up to the present moment and the beauty of spontaneity.

Program may include: furthering one's fire-making skills plus advanced techniques, explorations and wanders both day and night, wild and medicinal plant preparation, cooking meals on the fire, story telling, hide-work and leatherwork, advanced cordage, flint knapping (arrowheads), wood carving, basketry, awareness exercises, tracking, team building, communication and of course lots of games and swimming.  Just think of the options and where the week could go………!!!!!! Camp size will be limited.

Wild edibles and pine needle collection“Thank you, thank you, thank you, and your excellent staff for creating a camp that truly nurtured and nourished my son.  He said, “That was the best camp I’ve ever been to,” and his stories continue to go on -- it is amazing all that he learned.  He came home more sure of himself, more connected, with a head full of wonderful knowledge and a heart full of good memories.”

“The inner and outer journey.”  Come alive with adventure and discover the beauties of nature accessible only by foot. We will leave behind the modern world and use only what we carry on our backs, our own resourcefulness and gifts that that nature provides.  Campers will learn to depend on themselves as they pack their own packs and hike from one camp to the next.  They will also learn to depend on the whole group, make decisions cooperatively and build communication skills. Throughout this camp, much time will be spent on personal reflection, and helping campers develop more of a vision of who they are and who they are becoming. This will prepare us for the mini solo experience. This solo, rite of passage experience will serve as an opportunity to honor this transition from youth to pre-adulthood, something so needed in our youth today. Campers will also spend their final two days canoeing in the wilderness, to celebrate their experience.

Program includes: Backpacking through beautiful wilderness, backpacking etiquette, Outdoor and campfire cooking, Wilderness canoeing, Wilderness first-aid, Team building and communication skills, Ecology and natural history, Wilderness Philosophy, Tracking, Awareness activities.

“The wilderness backpacking trek was the highlight of Will's life so far”

Scout
Not offered in 2008

This Camp is the essence of what kids love to do- sneak, hide, stretch their awareness, and challenge themselves.  The ancient native scout roamed Turtle Island reading the landscape as they went, using all their senses to gather information  to find food and, of utmost importance, to protect their people.  They were highly trained and took their awareness to a deep level.

We will learn from the animals how to move silently, and to blend in thus becoming invisible.   We will learn how to tell from bird communication whether there is danger or safety.  Martial arts will be explored. Of course, camp will include the favorites like swimming, games,  stories by the fire and the awesome staff that make it all so fun. This camp is a full mind-body-heart experience.  Space is limited!

Living Earth Camps are in the shadows of Shenandoah National Park, nestled in the mountains amongst forest, field, and river.  A natural paradise with a lifetimes worth of learning and exploration.  The Living Earth Summer Camps are conveniently located in Sugar Hollow, just 20 minutes outside of Charlottesville, VA.  The overnight camps begin at 2PM and end at noon the final day.

Scholarship Fund:  We have a small scholarship fund available.  Please notify us by May 1 to qualify.  We also accept and greatly appreciate donations for this fund to help send kids to camp who otherwise wouldn’t be able to come.
