Homeschool Nature Studies

The Living Earth School offers a homeschool nature studies program in the Charlottesville, Virginia area.  The program is offered in both the spring and fall.  Nature studies programs are organized into age appropriate groups of 5-7, 8-10, and 11-17 year olds.

At the homeschool nature studies program time is spent entirely outdoors immersed in nature.  Nature and our guided activities help to awake the students' senses, intuition, and natural instincts.  We approach subjects through both the eyes of a scientist and eyes of an indigenous person.  As a result, students will begin to feel more connected to the world around them.

We believe that everyone has a special gift to bring to this world.  We strive to spark the students' passions because we know that is when they will learn best.  We call this passion-based learning.   We help the students find their own answers.  And rather than simply give answers, we encourage creative thinking, problem solving, and ask lots of questions.  Thus the learning is deeper and more meaningful.  From this their confidence naturally grows, and they are on their way to becoming more self-sufficient in both living and learning.

In the nature studies program we cycle through different topics.  We believe nature provides the best classroom.  The topics include:

  • Survival skills
  • Wild food / primitive cooking
  • Bird Language
  • Ecology /community
  • Crafts / tools
  • Nature studies
  • Peacemaker principles
  • Tracking
  • Awareness /observation
  • Storytelling

Though nature is the medium, and students often become empassioned naturalists, our deeper goal is to help develop more centered, self-motivated young adults, in touch with their gifts, passions and able to hold a vision for the future.  And all the while, students (and staff) have a lot of fun.  The cost for the session is on a sliding scale basis of $25 - $35 per day.  Remaining total after deposit must be paid on first day of the program.

For more information please call.  For the spring session, please let us know by March 1, 2005.  Send us a completed application form
(you must have Acrobat Reader to print this form; click here if you need to download it).  There is a $50 non-refundable deposit required to hold your place.  Enjoy!
